Lots of people think that who wins the Ottawa-Buffalo series will win the cup, but, I beg to differ. Both the Detroit Red Wings and the Anaheim Ducks have strong teams... Ok, who am I kidding, the Red Wings are garbage. They played a team in the 1st round that didn't even deserve to be in the playoffs in the first place, and then in the 2nd round, they faced the San Jose "Can't get past the 2nd round" Sharks. Anaheim will be Detroit's toughest challenge to date, and to be honest, I don't think Detroit can beat them. Anaheim is a much more physical team, and the Red Wings... Not so much. If I were to call this series either way, I would say Ducks in 6, only because the Red Wings like to make things difficult.

That means folks, that we will see in my personal opinion, a Anaheim/Ottawa Stanley Cup Final.

Canadian Hockey Fan's record for predictions to date: 3-1

3rd Round Predictions: Eastern Conference

VS.

Now that the 2nd round is over in the East, we are down to 2. The Buffalo Sabres will face the Ottawa Senators for the right to represent the East in the Stanley Cup Finals. Both teams are deep, but really, this series will come down to goaltending. Ryan Miller and Ray Emery have been solid for the whole playoffs, and who wins this series, will have the better goaltending. It sounds like it would be rather obvious, but it is true. If I were to breakdown both teams...

Buffalo's forwards are better than Ottawa's

Ottawa's defencemen are better than Buffalo's

Goaltending is roughly equal

If I were to make a prediction, I would say that it could go either way, but I think Ottawa will take it in 7, simply because their defence is better, and defence wins you championships.

O Canada: Should Canadian Hockey Fans Jump on Canadian Teams' Playoff Bandwagons Because They are a "Canadian" Team

Every year in the playoffs, in and around my school, I see people who pick teams to cheer for in the playoffs just for fun. Usually, it is because their favorite team is gone, and they need a reason to watch playoff hockey. But, as Canadians, should we have to cheer on whatever Canadian team makes it furthest, if we choose to hop on any bandwagon?

Lets look at this years example "Canadian" bandwagon team.

The Ottawa Senators right now are up 3-1 on the New Jersey Devils, meaning in all likelyhood, they will go on to the conference finals. How fitting that the Canadian team that makes it furthest in the playoffs comes from our nations capital. But, are they "truly" a Canadian team? Lets look at the numbers...

12 Canadians, 3 Americans, 1 Swede, 1 German, 1 Slovak, 1 Swiss, 1 Russian

Now, there seems to be lots of Canadians on the Senators, 12 in fact. But what about compared to other teams that are still alive in the playoffs (Including the Devils). Teams that have more Canadians will have their number bolded.

Anaheim Ducks: 16

Buffalo Sabres: 7

Detroit Red Wings: 6

New Jersey Devils: 7

New York Rangers: 6

San Jose Sharks: 13

Once you look at the numbers, you see that even though Ottawa is a Canadian team, they actually do not have the most Canadians on their roster. By using this logic, shouldn't Canadians be cheering for the Ducks, since they are technically the most "Canadian"?

It all boils down to one thing really... Anti-Americanism. Most Canadian hockey fans are mad that "Americans" took away 2 of our teams, and placed new expansion teams in questionable hockey markets such as Nashville and Atlanta. Plus too, why should we cheer for a team in a "bad hockey market" such as Anaheim when we have our own team in Ottawa.

The way I think people should do it, is instead of cheering for the "Canadian" team, why not cheer for hockey, and exciting hockey. For the record, Im cheering for the San Jose Sharks (Go Sharks!!!)

Sorry for the lack of articles

I know recently, the amount of articles has been lax, but I have a nice one Im working on about A-Rod, and I have another couple of ideas too. But, could he break the single season home run record...

In my opinion, it would be incredibly difficult for him to achieve, but you know what, I would rather he had the record than that idiot Barry Bonds, and Im sure other baseball fans would agree that aren't Giants fans. Rodriguez may not be the most likable person, but there has never really been proof he has used the roids either, so Im sure Commisioner Selig would LOVE for A-Rod to get the record.

If I were to give a projection on what totals A-Rod will have at the end of the year, I would say 75 HR/180 RBI is the ceiling he can hit "realistically", although something like 60 HR/150 RBI is more likely.

And what great timing for A-Rod too, because after this year, he can opt out of his contract with the Yankees. Can you say 25 million dollar pay day...

Thoughts on the NFL Draft: Stupid Picks, and Good Picks

Well, the NFL draft's first 3 rounds are over, and already, we see several teams making very questionable draft day decisions.

The Detroit Lions drafting Calvin Johnson: Ok, look, I know Johnson is a godly talent at wide receiver, that is not in doubt. What is in doubt is why the Detroit Lions took yet another wide receiver when they needed an offensive lineman (Joe Thomas or Levi Brown anybody) AND a defensive end (Gaines Adams or Jamaal Anderson anyone). This is the 4th year out of the past 5 they have taken a wide receiver, of which, only Roy Williams has really turned into a decent receiver. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm always a fan of taking the best player available. But, when you have GLARING holes at other positions, you have to fill them.

The Miami Dolphins drafting Ted Ginn Jr at 9: This here was the biggest "What the heck" pick of the day. They needed a young, franchise quarterback, and Brady Quinn *Who I personally think will be better than JaMarcus Russell*, was still on the board, and yet, they take basically a kick returner, since Ginn's receiving skills some say were not 1st round calibre. Now look, I don't care if Ginn ends up being as good of a kick returner as say Devin Hester, if he cant play wide receiver to what a 9th overall pick should, then why place unnecessary expectations on him, and why waste the pick. Mind you, I wouldnt be shocked if I ended up eating crow on this pick, cause it almost seems as if what the eff picks usually do well (Besides that great and talented wide receiver Mike Williams when he was picked by the Lions two years ago, I could see that one coming from a mile away)

Now, some good picks of the day...

Cleveland taking Brady Quinn at 22: I know there are a few Notre Dame haters out there, but since Im not really loyal enough to any school to pick a team, I can be a little less unbiased. One reason I feel Quinn will be a good QB, is because he was tutored in college by Charlie Weis, the same Charlie Weis who made Tom Brady into what he is today. And people say "Oh, Quinn can't win the big game". Well guess what, Peyton Manning couldn't win the big game supposedly, and look at him now. Dan Marino never won the big game, but he had a pretty good career too. To me, the only reason Quinn dropped so far is due to the fact teams overanalyse in some cases too too much, and because really, after Miami, no other team REALLY needed a QB, no other reason.

Tampa Bay taking Gaines Adams at 4: Everybody, including myself, thought Calvin Johnson would end up going to Tampa Bay, but, obviously we all forgot that Detroit loves taking Wide Receivers for some reason, so Tampa didn't get Johnson. But, I would say Adams is a perfectly reasonable compromise. If you look at their depth chart, all of their good defensive lineman (Such as Simeon Rice) are all on the wrong side of 30. Adams seems to have that explosion off the line, and although he may need to bulk up a bit to play end, a bit only means 5-10 pounds, and "smaller" defensive ends at the 255 pound range can succeed at the NFL level.

Honourable Mention: Denver Broncos taking Jarvis Moss

Lets hope Moss can be the fix to the pass rush woes the Broncos have. Now, to find a middle linebacker...

Western Conference Predictions: Summary Edition

Im not really in the mood to do a detailed prediction, so Im just gonna keep it short and sweet...

San Jose will beat Detroit in 6 cause I just think San Jose has more depth
Anaheim will beat Vancouver in 6 for same reason as San Jose will beat Detroit

So thus, we would have a San Jose-Anaheim conference final.

Its short, but I dont care.

Canadian Hockey Fan's 2nd Round Predictions: Eastern Conference

The 1st round produced quite a few good matchups this year. The Dallas/Vancouver series was a great series, with great goaltending. You also had the Lightning put up more of a challenge to the Devils than most thought they would. But, really, the 1st round is typically, to me, the most boring round of the playoffs, simply due to the fact that either...

1. You are still mad your team is out of the playoffs (That would be me) or...

2. You have a lot of mismatches (New York Rangers vs. the Kansas City/Atlanta Thrashers anyone *For my non hockey fan readers, I am making a joke about how bad the Atlanta market is a terrible market for hockey*)

But now, we get down to the nitty gritty. Typically, if a team makes it to the 2nd round, they should be in the 2nd round, and they will always put up a good fight. As a result, you see a lot more intensity, which leads to a lot more animosity, which leads to an instant classic. So, without further adieu, my predictions, starting with the Eastern Conference, and for each team, one player who could be an X factor.

'

Buffalo Sabres Vs. New York Rangers

If there is any series I think could produce an upset, this could be it. The Rangers have been oa roll right from the end of the season, and really do not have any distinct weaknesses. All of their big guns are firing on all cylinders, and Henrik Lundqvist has been dominant in goal. The Buffalo Sabres have been the best team in the league all season, and they have a very deep offence, led by Daniel Briere and Chris Drury. Combine that with Ryan Miller in goal, and an ok defence, and you have a solid well rounded team

New York's X Factor: Sean Avery

If there is one player who gets under everone's skin, it is Sean Avery. If he can get into the heads of the Buffalo forwards, then the Rangers could very well win this series

Buffalo's X Factor: Thomas Vanek

Vanek lead the Sabres with 43 goals this year, but even so, his playoff performances as of this date have not been inspiring. For Buffalo to win, he has to light the lamp, plain and simple.

Verdict: I really feel this series could go either way, but I feel Buffalo is too deep, and will win in 6 games

New Jersey Devils vs. Ottawa Senators

In a rematch of the 2003 Conference finals, we have 2 teams that nobody really talks about, yet people should. Despite losing a huge chunk of their defensive core of their Stanley Cup winning teams, the Devils still have a solid base. The EGG line of Patrik Elias, Scott Gomez, and Brian Gionta has been great for the Devils, and Zach Parise has 6 goals. Oh, how could I not mention the goaltending legend, Martin Brodeur, who always plays well come playoff time. Add the 3rd and 4th lines that you might as well call extra defencemen, and you have a bland, but dangerous team. The Senators have a very talented team up front, with 4 lines that I feel are capable of getting goals. Also, they have a solid defence led by Wade Redden, that is one of the better defences in the entire league. "Sugar" Ray Emery has played well for the Senators in goal this season, and has done a great job as the team tough guy too

New Jersey's X Factor Lou Lamoriello

I know your thinking "How can a GM/bench boss be an X factor". Well, the way I see it, the presence of Lamoriello behind the bench will play a factor at some point this playoffs, simply because having your coach also being your boss, well, that can sometimes take a toll on players, especially those in contract years, whether they are plugs, or stars

Ottawa's X Factor: Ray Emery

In order for Ottawa to win, Ray Emery will have to play on the same level Martin Brodeur will play, or even better possibly.

Verdict: It really could go either way, but I will pick Ottawa in 7, because if Ottawa's big guns (Heatley, Spezza, Alfredsson) play better than New Jersey's, then New Jersey is finished.

Since my computer decided to be all haywire while I was typing up the Western Conference Predictions, you will see those predictions tommorow. But, to recap, I see a conference final with Buffalo and Ottawa occuring in the East.

Round two predictions from Triscuit

It looks like the semi finals are hampering up to be a dogfight for hockey analysts this year. The only series that was unanimously decided one way or the other by TSN hockey analysts was NJ/Ott, in which they all chose Ottawa to slip past Marty Brodeur and the Devils.

I think said series is a good place for me to begin my semi final predictions. My fellow blogger, and cousin Jake (known here as Canadian Hockey Fan) can be called a witness to the statement that since I was in elementry school, the Sens have been easily my favourite (Canadian) NHL team. But, once again I don't see a Stanley Cup on it's way to Ontario. I have to disagree with TSN hockey analysts and go with the defensively minded Devils in six. This is a matter of my head prevailing over my heart. I don't think the Sens have enough in the tank to get past Marty. Expect every game to remain close though, as the Devils usually like to lean back on one or two goal leads.

On to the second Eastern Conference semi final; The darkhorse New York Rangers will attempt to dethrone Daniel Briere and the surging Buffalo Sabre. Once again, I have to say this series will be a matter of head over heart for me. I would love nothing more than to see the Rangers upset the Sabres and their ugly uniforms. Call me a bit biased against them for the elimination of my Philly Flyers in last year's playoffs ;) However, I do not believe that New York will be able to handle the Sabres. I see an easy five game cruise in Buffalo's future, with every game remaining salvageable due to great offense and goaltending.

The Red Wings vs The Sharks is shaping up to be a long awaited meeting of two of the most consistently great teams in the league, and this series will likely reflect that. Dominik Hasek isn't slowing down a bit in his old age, and I, for one am gracious that the Wings offed the dreaded Calgary Flames in the first round. The San Jose Sharks have a lot of momentum heading into this series, after defeating Nashville in just five games, grueling as they were. I am almost split down the middle with this one, but i'm going to take the less popular route and go with the Wings in six. Not much I can do to explain that; I just have a hunch.

Anaheim vs Vancouver will be the most interesting series in my oppinion. It will also be the closest. Both teams have allstar goaltending, and both teams struggled offensively in round one. I believe both these teams will break out in that regard, and that we will see a highly entertaining seven game fiasco with Anaheim edging in the final victory. Expect this to be highly physical as well ;)

So there you have it, I predict the conference finals to appear as follows:

Buffalo vs New Jersey

Detroit vs Anaheim

Lets see if I can beat the TSN analysts, and that evil Primeate, Maggie.

If Dallas Loses, and if Any Stupid Hockey Analyst Blames Marty Turco...

They will be the first victim of my "unintelligent sports commentator of the week" award (Expect the first "winner" to be announced later this week).

Now sure, Turco has been bad in other playoff years, but guess what, this year his play has been nothing short of outstanding. The reason why people are so gung-ho over this series now is because many people had ignorantly labelled this the year of Luongo, and perhaps an easy path to the Stanley Cup Final with the Sedins busting out offensively. Everything in Canucks country seems strong right now to their fans. And I couldn't agree more. Dave Nonis has built himself a hell of a team. But one thing most 'Nucks fans hadn't been hoping for was a first round rollercoaster ride with the National Hockey League's most underappreciated squads, the Dallas Stars.

The Stars, riding a superb counter-Luongo performance of goalie Marty Turco (one that reminds me of Nikolai Khabibulin's exploits in the 2004 Playoffs), have indeed forced a game 7 in Vancouver. The reason why I believe the Stars to be so underrated is largely due to the fact that they have been one of the League's most consistent teams in their existance, also boasting a great financial history to boot. This year they face off with the League's most hyped team, and I can't say i'm surprised that they have played whipping boy to many fans and media personnel alike. It's funny that once your goalie posts three shutouts and you force a seventh game in a series that was once 3-1, people start to recant their earlier beliefs. This series has warped into one of the closest in recent history. And yet i'm not surprised.

Marty Turco is indeed one of the NHL's most underappreciated Goaltenders. Many forget who he took the reigns from in Dallas, being the Legendary Ed Belfour. I think he's done quite well for himself, don't you?

Turco isn't the only player on the Dallas Stars that gets overlooked until his team is making media headlines. Defenseman Philippe Boucher is one of the best two-way Dmen in the league. Don't believe me? Take a long study of this guy's stats and his reputation among the Stars' faithful. Boucher picked up 19 goals and 51 points this regular season, averaging just over 22 minutes per game. A quick glance at Boucher's leadership on the ice, combined with his statistics begs the question; "Why isn't he a household name?" Yes, it is likely because he plays for the Dallas Stars, who don't recieve very good media coverage in Canada and hockey hotbeds like New York. Perhaps it could be that Boucher doesn't play a flashy style. Fact is, that he gets the job done and should be ranked among the elite in the National Hockey League today. CBS Sportsline ranks him 39th among active Defensemen, behind players such as Brendan Witt, Kevin Bieksa and Christoph Schubert.

More underrated players on the Stars lineup include Jeff Halpern, Jere Lehtinen, Joel Lundqvist, and Ladislav Nagy. If you look at the Stars lineup right now, you should not be surprised that this team is a legitimate threat to the Canucks and the rest of the league.

In their typical fashion, the Stars finished two points ahead of the Canucks this season, and still have to endure Vancouver's home-ice advantage due to the fact that the Canucks won their division.

I mean no disrespect to the great Canucks lineup, but the Dallas Stars are a team that should not be taken lightly or overlooked by anybody. Did I forget to mention that many analysts predicted that the Stars wouldn't even make the Playoffs this year?

What to Expect Over the Next Couple of Weeks

NHL Mock Draft

Thoughts on the NFL Draft

2nd round predictions for the NHL Playoffs

Those are some ideas I have in my head for some good articles. You used to see it a lot back in the old days, when the first two rounds were divisional based (See the Hartford Whalers in the old Adams Division while the Quebec Nordiques were dreadful *Sorry Tristan, it had to be said*). These days though, with "enforced parity", you would think it wouldn't happen right? Well, today, I found out, that was completely incorrect.

The Calgary Flames lost to the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 today, in a game where the Flames basically went out of their way to play as dirty as they could humanly possibly play. Goaltender Jamie McLennan, after only 18 seconds on the ice after replacing Miikka Kiprusoff, slashed Red Wings forward Johan Franzen in the midsection. This action earned McLennan a match penalty and a game misconduct. Also, Jarome Iginla, who I usually have a lot of respect for, earned 2 late penaltys, for aggressive stick work. Iginla said about the stick work (This is a direct quote) "It was really about getting some fights going at that point to keep our energy up and carry some anger into the next game".

Now wait a minute, I thought the whole point of the "new rules" was to get rid of that crap, even in playoff time. To me, that attitude is not only very bush league, but also quite frankly, plain pathetic. Sure, there is nothing wrong with a little emotion, as it is what makes hockey the best sport out there. But, just going out there to pick fights for the reason of simply picking fights, that is plain silly.

You know McLennan will probably get a suspension, though as a backup goalie, I'm not so sure how he could serve a suspension really. 10 games, 20 games, doesn't really matter, as all he has done most of the year is sit on the bench. Lucky for Iginla though, he didn't get in a fight, otherwise, an instigator would have went his way and he could have got a 1 game suspension.

Now, if this isn't evidence that the Calgary Lames don't belong in the playoffs, to be quite frank, I don't know what else I could give ya.

(And for the record, the Colorado Avalanche are the team that deserves to be in the playoffs in the 8th Western seed instead, and their 6-3 drubbing of Calgary on the last day of the season is my proof. But, because of those stupid Seattle... I mean Nashville Predators and of course, the Calgary Lames, they couldn't get in. And to think, if the Avs were in the East, they would have been in 6th and faced the Kansas City... I mean Atlanta Thrashers *Can you say bring out your brooms*)

Editors Note: If this sounded too much like an Avs fan making fun of several hockey clubs, well, that is exactly what it is, and if you don't like it, then think of dancing monkeys and chocolate, and you will be adequately entertained

Telfair facing charges of possession of an illegal firearm

I was rather surprised and taken aback last evening while watching the ticker on the nightly "Score update". There was one notification that stood out from the regular scores and stats i'm used to seeing. Yes, readers, it was reported last night that NBA Boston Celtics Guard Sebastian Telfair has been arrested in New York on an apparent charge of having a loaded gun underneath the front seat in his car. Telfair was pulled over as he was speeding, going 77 MPH in a 45 maximum zone. Telfair did not have a valid drivers license, and so his SUV was impounded, and the gun was later discovered. When questioned about the gun, Telfair stated he knew nothing about it, or how it got into his vehicle. The gun was not registered.

This isn't the first time Telfair has been in trouble with the law over gun charges. In 2006, a handgun registered to his girlfriend was found in his pillowcase, of all places. He was suspended for two days.

My question to the readers is simply, what do you think of this incident? I don't believe this charge affects the game of basketball, myself. After all, even hockey has players that run amok with the law. (Theroren Fleury anyone?) Now, Im not the biggest basketball fan out there, and I probably will write about basketball the least out of all of the sports, but I have a soft spot for the Toronto Raptors. You almost have to feel sorry for them in a way, because between apathetic superstars (Im talking to you Vince Carter) and moronic management, they have been through rough times.

But, now, the Raptors are in the playoffs, and could make some noise. Of course, in order to do so, they have to get through Vince Carter's New Jersey Nets. The Raptors have a great PF in Chris Bosh, who unlike Vince Carter, actually tries, and seems to like the direction the Raptors are headed. Combine that with a strong bench with guys like Jose Calderon, Andrea Bargnani, Kris Humphries and Morris Peterson, and you have a recipe for a long playoff run.

However, the Nets have the advantage of experience on their side. Guys like Carter, Jason Kidd, and Richard Jefferson have been around for a while. Also, Bostjan Nachbar has been a revelation this year.

This series really could go either way, but I am inclined to think the Raptors take this in 6, simply because their bench seems to be better than New Jersey's.

(For some Vince Carter bashing, look below)

(Vince Carter)

Just look at this picture of him during his Raptors career. Doesn't he look like a guy who is thinking "At least I get my 15 million dollar paycheque". Well, if you can't tell that by this smug looking smile, then I would really wonder about you. You still are a crybaby Vince, and I hope you are booed loudly by the Air Canada Centre faithful Saturday night. Can't wait for you to bail on New Jersey too.

(The real Vince Carter)

Sharks, Sabres join Ducks, Rangers, and Senators in 2nd Round

The 2nd round is starting to shape up, with 5 teams having advanced. The San Jose Sharks defeated the Nashville Predators 3-2, thanks to a goal by Patrick Marleau late in the 3rd period. The Sharks took that series 4-1, in what many thought would be a much closer series. The Buffalo Sabres (I refuse to use that ugly Slug logo, so ill use their old school logo, which looks fine to me) beat the New York Islanders 4-3 tonight, to take a highly controversial series 4-1, in which questionable officiating clearly hurt the Islanders.

The Sharks could end up facing any one of Detroit, Anaheim, or Dallas, depending on who wins the Detroit-Calgary series and the Vancouver-Dallas series. The Sabres will either face the New York Rangers, or Tampa Bay, depending on the results of the New Jersey-Tampa Bay series.

(For reference on what the Slugs logo looks like for my non hockey fan readers, look below)

That is just a dreadful logo, so for future reference, any story that requires a Buffalo Sabres logo, will use their far superior old school logo

Lets See How This Goes

My first blog, and I don't know what to say.
